What is Depression?

Depression is a mood state usually characterized by sadness, irritability, anxiety, and/ or loss of interest in life. Experiencing depression following negative events is a normal human response. Everyone feels depressed at times. However, some people can remain in a full or partially depressed mood state due to a depressive disorder. People with depressive disorders do not function at optimal levels and can have trouble with work, school, or relationships. Many times people with depressive disorders do not seek treatment because they hope things will get better on their own or they cannot see how the depression is really affecting them.
